‘Because we have lived, and still live on’

On the 17th of August 2025, 80 years have passed since Indonesia officially declared its independence. It wasn’t until four years later when the Netherlands officially acknowledged the independence of its former colony.

These events were reflected in literature, and literature in turn contributed to the formation of Indonesian, Indo-Dutch, and Dutch identities. The exhibition addresses diverse perspectives on the decolonization of Indonesia and shines light on stories and archive material from the first, second, and third generation of writers, of whom their life histories are connected to (de)colonization. Because the consequences of this are still palpable.
