Philip Hopman's choice - In the picture

A few years ago, Hopman donated very many of his drawings to the museum. For this exhibition he selected the works he considers to be the most beautiful, funny or important.

Philip Hopman ( 1961) wanted to be a fashion designer, but soon found he was better with the brush than the needle. In 1988, the first book he illustrated was published, and many books followed, including the Jubelientje books by Hans Hagen, the Ridder Florian series by Marjet Huiberts, the Boer Boris books by Ted van Lieshout, and Abeltje and Wiplala by Annie M.G. Schmidt. As he himself says, he makes drawings to get lost in. His work is colourful and sunny and full of pace as well as funny details, making his drawings stories in themselves. In 2022, Hopman won the Max Velthuijs Prize: the most important illustration prize there is in our country.

A few years ago, Hopman donated very many of his drawings to the museum. For Philip Hopman’s Choice – In Pictures he selected the works he considers to be the most beautiful, funny or important. And drawings that look very easy, but which he had to work on for a very long time to get them just right. He also created several murals especially for this exhibition. Wander through his personal choice and enjoy his stories.
