Illustrations in children’s books are often the child’s first encounter with visual art. The Children’s Book Museum is full of exciting, poignant and comical illustrations that will delight children of all ages.

In this lesson, children will step into the mind of the illustrator and consider which text goes with which image. Did the illustrator draw the scene literally or did they use their imagination? How do writers and illustrators work together? Which came first, the words or the illustration? And of course, the children will have the chance to do a bit of illustrating themselves. They’ll create their own drawings and create stories to go with them.

The lesson What came first? is part of the Cultuurmenu, The Hague’s heritage education project in which eighteen participating museums and cultural institutions provide lessons for local schoolchildren.
